How Much Should I Charge Up Front?

You might be thinking: How much should I charge up front? I didn’t even know I was supposed to charge up front!

To be honest, that may or may not be the right move for your business. But, if you decide to take a payment up front (usually called a deposit)…

How much money should you take up front for your freelance project?

Is it fair to take a deposit?

Should you even take any money up front at all? It’s not like the client has anything in their hands to pay for right now.

You don’t have to pay for your groceries before you leave the store, so why should a client have to pay when you haven’t given them anything yet?

The logic is almost sound here, but you shouldn’t fall into this trap.

Are there certain side hustlers that should take a deposit?

Good question! Freelancers fall into this category, but so do some product sellers—and even a few content creators.

The idea here is to think about how much work you’re going to do, how long you’re going to work with your client, and what you’ll need on your end to get started with the project.

So, how much should I charge up front?

This heavily depends on how much you charge in total and how much effort it’s going to take for you to get this project done.

A freelance designer might want to charge a flat percentage before getting started if it’ll be a long project, while certain content creators might have to finesse their situation to get a check before the work is done—not saying it can’t happen.

On the other hand, some product sellers might want to charge a big portion of the total cost before starting any work at all.

Like I said, it depends.

Don’t worry—there’s more!
